Dr Wilson is a retired Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Liverpool. He has specialised in the management of depression in older people and younger people with progressive brain diseases.He has held a variety of senior management positions within the NHS, research and and medical education organisations at national level. He has some experience in charity work has established an organisation to promote education and service development for people with alcohol related brain damage. He has a variety of hobbies, including fell walking, canal boating and local and medieval history.
